Congratulations to our Wattpad.com contest winner, JuniperFlowerIII. Juniper continued The Adventures of You: Fabulous Terrible in a creative, innovative way. Did she guess how writer Sophie Talbot continues the story? Not quite, but you'll need to check back this spring to read on.
And now, for the winning entry, a continuation of "Fabulous Terrible"'s cliff-hanger ending:
It has been five long days since you found out the truth about your shimmers, since Chloe LaFleur went missing. Elizabeth had told you not to worry about Chloe, she told you to worry about keeping yourself safe and nothing else. But although you hadn’t known Chloe LaFleur very well, you felt a connection with her, she was just like you.
It’s Wednesday night but you can’t sleep. You just lay on your bed so many questions running through your mind. Who were the other kids who had the shimmers? Who was Emma Woodhouse? Are you really ‘the one’ Elizabeth spoke of? Who took Chloe LaFleur? And last of all, who would they take next?
You’ve been puzzling over these for a good ten minutes when you feel a familiar tingling, a shimmer.
There’s something different about this particular shimmer, it is as if you are actually there physically.
You feel an icy wind whipping against your face and you look around. You’re surrounded by lush green forest, so dense it has a dark shadowy feel to it. You appear to be on a steep slope and in the distance you can just make out the shape of a brick wall. Something sparks in your memory, ‘they say there’s an ancient brick wall at the base that’s impossible to get around,’ you remember a girl saying. That’s when you realise; you’re on top of Mount Demetria!
You can’t help but think about the Three Fifth Form girls Casey was talking about. What could they have possibly seen up here that could be so terrible that they never closed their eyes again? You suppress a shudder and hope the shimmer ends before you get the chance to find out.
Suddenly you can hear muffled voices, and like a magnet you are pulled against your will towards the sound. You recognise the place immediately. It is the meadow, the one from your shimmers. This time however the voices are not those of woman chanting. Instead they are the deep voices of men arguing. You search for the source of the voices, but you can’t see anyone. The meadow must be deep in the forest, you think, you can no longer see the brick wall. Suddenly not far from where you are standing, a man appears. You have no idea how he got there, he seems to have formed out of thin air.
The man is facing straight ahead with the side of his face to you. You can tell that he is reasonably young, probably in his early thirties. He has a jagged scar across the side of his face, starting at the eyebrow and ending abruptly at the middle of his cheek. His eyes are an endless pool of black like a serpent’s, and his face has an unnatural sunken look about it. If ever there was a word to describe him you’d have to pick terrifying.
The man is talking to someone but you can’t see who, you can’t seem to take your eyes of him.
“Is she the one?” the man asks
“Hard to tell, she only speaks French,” came the reply. With a start you realise they are talking about Chloe and not only that but the other voice is vaguely familiar. But where from? You ask yourself.
The man’s voice takes on a frustrated tone, “Well find out!” He spits, “We need to find the one before-” He suddenly cuts off in the middle of his sentence, looking confused for a moment as if he has just noticed something unexpected. Then ever so slowly, he turns his head and looks directly at you.
The shimmer ends instantly and you are left sitting up, breathing heavily in your bed. You look at the time and see that it is 3:00am. About two hours have passed since the shimmer started, it is the longest shimmer you’ve ever had.
You walk down to breakfast and friends are already there. You put on a smile but you know it doesn’t reach your eyes. You finally want to, but you can’t tell them about your shimmers or that you’re an orphan, Samantha is living proof that having that knowledge is dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands. You won’t be able to live with yourself if someone uses your friends to get to you.
You don’t have to tell them about Chloe, they already know. After all it has been the gossip of the school for the past four days. Girls are starting to worry that they’ll be next. You think about the men from your shimmer, they knew where Chloe was, and you were willing to bet that it had something to do with mount Demetria.
Anupa snaps you out of your thoughts “are you okay?” she asks a look of concern crossing her face.
“Yeah I’m fine,” you lie. In your head you are already planning on a trip to a mountain.
An hour later finds you outside of school grounds, you’re skipping classes today and you told your friends that you were sick and needed sleep. It wasn’t the best Alibi but it would buy you some time at least.
You walk the long route to Mount Demetria and sure enough at the base is that same brick wall from your shimmer. You don’t need to worry about getting pass though; it looks like someone has saved you the effort by smashing a hole in the wall. You frown, you’re not exactly sure if this is a good thing but you step in anyway.
The forest is exactly as it was in your shimmer, only this time you can hear every leaf crunch beneath your feet, every bird, every animal, you’re acutely aware of them all. Deeper in the forest you are suddenly filled with dread, something isn’t right.
There is a flash in the trees nearby too quick to comprehend. A twig snaps behind you, you turn around and what you see makes your blood run cold.
